HypnoBirthing® is as much a philosophy as it is a technique. The concept of HypnoBirthing® is influenced - among other things - by attitudes of pre historic cultures who greatly respected and valued women as the creators of life. This philosophy of birth is reflected in the work of Dr. Grantly Dick-Read, an English obstetrician from the Early 20th Century, who emphasised the concept of natural childbirth. This method teaches that, in the absence of fear and tension, or special medical circumstances, severe pain does not have to be an accompaniment of labour.
During a HypnoBirthing® course an expectant mother and her partner or birth companion are taught techniques to remain calm and at ease throughout pregnancy and birth. These include visualisation and self hypnosis methods proven to be extremely effective in ensuring a woman remains relaxed and in harmony with her baby and her marvellous birthing device (a.k.a her womb). She will learn how to enhance her pregnancy experience using healthy diet, posture, exercise and lifestyle choices to minimise or even prevent many of the 'minor ailments' frequently suffered by other pregnant women.

More About HypnoBirthing®
HypnoBirthing® – an ideal way to give Birth Naturally
Education is one of the many aspects used to help an expectant couple to unlearn false and frightening myths which have evolved over the years. You can learn to replace intimidating terminology like "Pain" "Labour" - used to describe childbirth - believed by many to be hard work for many hours and deeply painful! HypnoBirthing® provides the means to experience childbirth calmly in joy, without such negative expectations.
Statistics
The statistics collected by the HypnoBirthing® Institute demonstrate that Caesarean rates are halved. 65% of HypnoBirthing® women do not use any pain medication and the epidural rate is decreased by two thirds.
In Australia (similar to USA) we have one of the highest Caesarean rates in the world. The overall caesarean rate has reached 32.3% and up to 49% for women aged over 40. Of women who gave birth in Australian Hospitals in 2009, around a third (32.6%) had a caesarean section delivery. The caesarean section rate of 42.5% for women in private hospitals was higher than for women in public hospitals (28.4%). The World Health Organization recommends that the caesarean section rate should not be higher than 10% to 15%. Once cesarean delivery rate reached 10% …. further increase in cesarean delivery rate has NO impact on maternal, neonatal or infant mortality. Established guidelines recommend that caesarean sections not be used before 39 weeks without a medical indication to perform the surgery, mainly to ensure the baby's respiratory system has fully matured.
In many couples’ experience HypnoBirthing® promotes a rapid postnatal recovery, facilitates a beautiful bonding experience and returns birth to the natural process it is meant to be. It doesn’t have to be painful in the absence of Special Circumstances - which are very rare.
Women know how to give birth and they simply need to learn how to tap into that part of the mind that enables easy birth to occur. Unlike other childbirth methods that teach you how to cope with and manage pain, HypnoBirthing® is based on the premise that childbirth does not necessarily need to be painful if the mother is properly prepared and relaxed.
Women learn that pain is caused by adrenalin-related hormones, created by fear. So instead they learn how to release fear and create endorphins* – which relax tension and alleviate discomfort. This allows women to change their expectations of long, painful labour and replace them with expectations of a more natural, comfortable birth. HypnoBirthing® parents learn deep breathing and total relaxation techniques, enabling the birthing mother to work in harmony with her body and her baby. This allows her to achieve a shorter and more comfortable labour for herself and baby.
Many hospitals, obstetricians and midwives are now familiar with HypnoBirthing® having seen the benefits first hand, so during a HypnoBirthing® course, parents develop a plan with Birth Preferences, which help to communicate birthing goals and preferences to primary health care provider during labour.
Here’s what a mother who birthed using HypnoBirthing®, said “I felt so much more confident about the actual birth. A few months ago I couldn’t get my head around the event! HypnoBirthing changed my perceptions and preconceived notions about birth, and gave me practical tools that helped me stay relaxed and have a natural, amazing birth. I was able to approach the birth with much more confidence.”
